Unearthed networks are common in two areas:
Unearthed networks in hospitals: Home safety requires a residual current circuit breaker, a device which disconnects the electricity in case of a leakage, such as an earthed person touching an energized part of a circuit. Hospitals also need safe electric power, especially in places such as operating theaters where many electrical devices are used in close quarters by more than a few people, on a patient. However, hospitals cannot afford disconnection of the electric power in case of failure and therefore use an isolation transformer. The use of such a transformer has two significant advantages. One advantage is that touching an energized part of the circuit does not electrocute the first person touching it. The second advantage is the ability to monitor the isolated electrical network for leakage and report of such a fault without disconnecting the electrical power. The use of isolated transformers in hospitals is mandatory worldwide and this subject is covered by many international standards.

Unearthed networks in mobile generators: Mobile generators produce electrical power and have no grounding (opposed to stationary generators). Without grounding, the use of a residual current circuit breaker is impossible. Although the first touch does not electrocute, the unearthed network needs a monitoring and warning unit to detect the first fault.
